dennyone The music, the lyrics: dancing with tears in your eyes. Three songs, three direct hits into the heart. unbelievable! Favorite track: True North.

discoinfernal These guys might be underselling themselves slightly with the emphasis on nostalgia. This EP to me is less about cozy recollections of the past and more about reconciling your idealistic younger self with whatever mess you’ve become as an adult. I would have gladly taken a full album of this, but three near-perfect songs is good enough. Any new material from Nicholas McManus is a reason to celebrate. Favorite track: True North.
James Hughes

James Hughes Sets out to capture the feeling of nostalgia and delivers it in spades. This is exactly what I needed, but the trumpet at the end of True North is the icing on the cake. Chef kiss. Favorite track: True North.

True North 06:45
True North You came over On a Friday. It’d been a weird day And I was half cut. We talked about him And his lyrics And what he had done And how he did it. He drank where we drank, He sung where we sung; One degree of separation. So put on the four-track And listen to them, The younger us: Those setting sons. Ten years older But none the wiser. The same old blue jeans, The same old pipe dreams Like: Is it too late now To pack our jobs in? Let’s move to Berlin And grow our hair out And start a punk band, Play some basement shows, And sell some records Finally. We can hang in Das Gift, Maybe work a few shifts, Rent a place in Kreuzberg, Live an endless summer. We’ll never do that. We’ll never be that. But that’s alright, man: You know I love you. But it’s too important, It’s far too easy To leave the things we need to hear unsaid. So: When the sun falls On the Ship Inn And we’re together - All of us - That is True North. That is daybreak. The endless summer, The lingering heartache fades.

Still Cool So, is this what you wanted? Is it how you remember Those summers long ago? Before they shut the Arches down. Before you moved to Glasgow. When everything was golden; When everything was new. Long days in the West End. Long nights in the basement In Sleazy’s, Your shadow on the ceiling, Thrown by the lights. Did it mean anything? So it feels strange to see you now Dancing in this place, Beautiful and timeless. You haven’t changed a day. I remember the first time: I remember Over The Wall; I remember every word of every verse of every song, I remember it all. I remember how it felt And I still feel it. I remember how it felt And I still feel it. And I still feel it. When the night is over And we stand there looking older. What happened to our faces? What happened to our friends? Are we still cool and were we ever? I remember how it felt And I still feel it.

Feeling Fine 05:41
Feeling Fine When the city shutters up, When the clubs are clearing out, When the summer moon is up, When the cabs are homeward bound, I will take the long walk home Because you’ve been on my mind. When the streets are all my own, Glasgow, I am feeling fine. Love comes in quiet ways: The sound, the smoke, the lights, In the most unlikely place, On the most unlikely night. I will take the long walk home Because you’ve been on my mind. When the night is mine alone, Glasgow, I am feeling fine What storms are yet to come? What buildings left to burn? What songs are still unsung? No corners left to turn. I will take the long walk home Because you’ve been on my mind. Into the great unknown. Glasgow, I am feeling fine.

about

Dead Modern is a band born of that quintessential modern condition: nostalgia.

Nostalgia for youth. Nostalgia for the music of 1979 or 1989. Nostalgia for the club nights and basement gigs of 2009. Nostalgia for the long-shuttered venues of The Arches and Studio24. Nostalgia for old dreams and old friends.

Formed from the Scottish indie rock and electronic music underground - with members from There Will Be Fireworks, The Youth and Young and New Year Memorial among others - Dead Modern recorded Still Cool with producer/engineer Andy Miller (Mogwai, Life Without Buildings, Songs: Ohia) at Gargleblast Studio in Hamilton, Scotland in 2019 and 2020.

Still Cool is a meditation on the past and how it forms us - what was lost, what was won and just how the hell did we get here? And how do we get back? Universal themes placed in the very specific context of a long-ago youth misspent in Glasgow's indie clubs.

We remember how it felt, and we still feel it.

If you like analogue synths...

If you ever lost your friends at Death Disco...

If you ever sweated your bodyweight at a downstairs gig in the Captain's Rest...

This is for you.
